Game Clocks Provide Valuable Information

The basic rules of organized basketball state that in order to win the game, more points need to be scored in allotted time for the game than the other team. Counting on the referees or both teams to independently keep track of how much time is left in the game can lead to discrepancies and arguments. In order to avoid situations like that game clocks were developed.

A game clock is a large visual display that is usually attached high up on a wall in a centralized location where both teams can see it at all times. A game clock provides valuable information interested parties such as:
  • Players
  • Coaches
  • Fans
  • Referees
  • Timekeepers and scorekeepers
Most organized basketball games are either two timed halves or four timed quarters. Knowing the amount of time remaining in the half or quarter is very important in regards to strategizing and creating a sense of urgency in coaches and players.

The Evolution of the Game Clock

The term "game clock” comes from the early instances of these devices that focused only on showing the time remaining in the half or the quarter of the game. While this is valuable information, over time more information was added to the game clock in order to make it more useful and convenient for everyone at the game.

The current half or quarter and the score of the game were the first additions to the standard game clock. This helped to resolve issues and disputes that could sometimes occur with each team keeping an accurate account of the score by providing the score for everyone to see at all times. Having both the time remaining as well as the score made it much easier for coaches to plan player substitutions and employ better strategy depending on game situations. This also equated to a better experience for fans as they were more knowledgeable and attached to what was happening in the games.

Over time the size and capabilities of the game clock grew, allowing more relevant information to be added. Some game clocks are now able to show player numbers as they accumulate fouls. Most clocks automatically switch to seconds and tenths of a second remaining when there is less than a minute left in the period. This allows for the most accurate timekeeping possible.

The design of game clocks has focused on providing relevant information to the people playing, coaching and watching the game while organizing this information in an easy to read manner. This generally means that information is limited to just the most useful information in order to simplify things.

Technology is bringing wireless updating capabilities to game clocks as well making scorekeeping easier than ever before.

Command Attention

Most game clocks display their information is a very visually appealing manner. Game clocks are usually placed in a part of the gym that is central and they automatically become a focal point. Investing in a game clock is a great way to ensure that the fans stay engaged and are able to enjoy the basketball game as much as possible by always knowing what the game situation is in regards to score and time remaining.
